Don’t need your IRA retirement savings as much as you once thought?

Learn more about how a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can benefit you.

If you are 70½ or older and have an IRA, you are already qualified!

How a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) works

You are at least 70½ years old with IRA funds you no longer need.

You make a QCD from your IRA.

Your QCD goes directly to Habitat, supporting a cause you care about.

*If you are 73 years old or older, your QCD can count towards your required minimum distribution (RMD)!

Smart Giving From Your IRA — Qualified Charitable Distribution

Many donors feel that directly transferring funds from IRAs is a great tax-saving way to help Habitat families. This popular gift option was commonly referred to as an IRA charitable rollover and is now known as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Benefits of Giving From Your IRA:

  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
  • The transfer of funds counts toward your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you 73 or older.

Be sure to check with your professional advisor to determine whether this gift plan is right for you. This information is not meant as tax or legal advice.

How it Works:

  • You must be 70½ or older, and if you are required to take minimum distributions (RMD) at 73 or older, this gift will satisfy all or part of your obligation.
  • You can give any amount (up to $108,000 per individual) in 2025 from your IRA directly to Habitat. Habitat for Humanity International is a qualified charity to receive these gifts.
  • If you would like to use this popular way to support Habitat, visit our Checklist to Make Your Qualified Charitable Distribution to Habitat.

IRA institutions don’t always include donor names, contact information, or designations with the gift, which can delay your tax receipt and potentially result in tax liabilities. To help prevent this, email plannedgiving@habitat.org or call 833-434-4438 with:

  1. Your full name, mailing address, and phone number
  2. Name of the financial institution
  3. The date you made the request
  4. Amount of gift
  5. Designation, for example, area of most need, specific program, region or local office

To ensure your gift is credited toward the 2025 tax year, please request your transfer by December 1, especially if you are relying on this gift to fulfill your Required Minimum Distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am turning age 70½ in a few months. Can I make this gift now?

No. You must be 70½ by the date you make the gift.

I have several retirement accounts—some are pensions and some are IRAs. Does it matter which retirement account I use?

Yes. Direct gifts to a qualified charity can be made only from an IRA. Under certain circumstances, however, you may be able to roll assets from a pension, profit sharing, thrift savings plan (TSP), 401(k), or 403(b) plan into an IRA and then make the transfer from the IRA directly to Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco. To determine if a rollover to an IRA is available for your plan, speak with your plan administrator.

Can my gift be used as my required minimum distribution?

Yes, absolutely. Beginning in the year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your RMD.

Do I need to give my entire IRA to be eligible for the tax benefits?

No. You can give any amount under this provision, as long as it is no more than $108,000 this year. If your IRA is valued at more than $108,000, you can transfer a portion of it to fund a charitable gift.

When do I need to make my gift?

We must receive your gift by Dec. 31 for your donation to qualify this year. If you have check-writing features on your IRA, please be aware that your check must clear your account by Dec. 31 to count toward your required minimum distribution for the calendar year.

I have two charities I want to support. Can I give $108,000 from my IRA to each?

No. Under the law, you can give a maximum of $108,000 this year. For example, you can give each organization $54,000 this year or any other combination that totals $108,000 or less. Any amount of more than $108,000 in one year must be reported as taxable income.

My spouse and I would like to give more than $108,000. How can we do that?

If you have a spouse (as defined by the IRS) who is 70½ or older, they can also give any amount up to $108,000 from their IRA.

Can I use the transfer to fund life-income gifts like charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts?

Yes! If you are 70½ or older, you may now make a one-time QCD up to $54,000 (without being taxed) to fund a charitable gift annuity (CGA) and earn a lifetime of fixed payments. Some limitations apply, so contact us for more details and a personalized illustration at no obligation.

I have already named Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco as the beneficiary of my IRA. What are the benefits if I make a gift now instead of after my lifetime?

By making a gift this year of any amount up to $108,000 from your IRA, you can see your philanthropic dollars at work. You are jump-starting the legacy you would like to leave and giving yourself the joy of watching your philanthropy take shape. Moreover, you can fulfill any outstanding pledge you may have made by transferring that amount from your IRA as long as it is $108,000 or less for the year.
